This will not only help educate the patients but also save them from landing up with semi-professional clinics. They can understand the cost of the procedure, check the past patient reviews, compare before and after photographs and also understand the various techniques available to conduct the transplant.
Hair transplant industry in India is flourishing on a daily basis due to growing awareness in the general population, hence, a procedure that was once considered to be celebrities only is now being used by general population as well. India has even become the hub for medical tourism in the field of Hair transplant. The procedure involves harvesting of hair grafts from the specific areas of your body (referred to as donor areas) which are then transplanted at the desired bald area. The procedure involves following broad steps:

1. Hair line design at the target site

2. Depending upon the technique used, trimming of the hair around the site is performed

3. Hair grafts are harvested from the source or the donor area. There are broadly two techniques involved here: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) or FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

4. Slitting is done at the target site

5. At the target bald site, hair grafts harvested in step 3 are placed

6. PRP (Platelet rich plasma) therapy is done at times to boost healing and hair growth

7. Follow up sessions to monitor results

Techniques in hair transplant

There are two major techniques: FUT Hair Transplant and FUE Hair transplant, the major difference is on account of the ways the hair grafts are harvested. The graft harvesting methods are explained as follows:

1. FUT or strip hair transplant: FUT hair transplant is performed by removing a very thin strip from the donor area which is then divided in order to separate each hair graft. The size of the strip usually depends upon the hair density or the number of grafts needed. Division of the strip takes place under high resolution microscopes to isolate the hair follicles. The individual hair graft is then carefully transplanted at the desired bald site and the donor area is sutured. To ensure minimal or invisible scarring, at this step also a new technology is being used which is known as trichophytic closure.

2. FUE hair transplant: Here a small punch like device is used to extract the hair grafts from under the skin of the donor area which are then directly transplanted at the recipient bald site. Due care should be taken to pull out hair grafts at higher distance to avoid scarring at the donor site. Also, to minimize the hair graft damage, it is important to immediately transplant the extracted graft.

Does FUT score over FUE ?

FUT Hair transplant technique has several incremental advantages over other methods such as :

1. FUT hair transplant technique can provide higher yield of hair grafts i.e. 3000 – 3500 hair grafts.

2. It is possible to provide a higher density look

3. Donor site is well preserved as only a small surface of donor area is used and remaining is preserved for future sittings or multiple sessions

4. The technique does not require shaving of hair and thus, is preferred by women and most men.

5. Minimal damage to hair grafts because the procedure is performed using high magnification microscopes as compared to FUE where follicles are pulled out with force blindly.

6. Since, there is no blunt force application in FUT, it is possible to retain the hair grafts for upto 8 hours outside the body

7. Shorter duration procedure - FUT hair transplant technique requires less time as compared to FUE.

Hence, it is fairly certain the FUT Technique is the best hair transplant method. Hair transplant cost in India is also fairly economical and affordable as it is almost 5-6 times lesser than that in the US, UK or UAE with almost similar levels of technology deployment.
